A cautionary tale

I bought the book because I was researching the acceptance of torture within an organizational or military context, and for that it's very useful -- and extremely well-written. However, as I read McCoy's inspired exploration of military socialization to either support civilian primacy and rule of law (at the cost of the soldiers' lives), or to disdain and despise civilian values and to become the law (at the cost of civilian lives), I was tremendously impressed.

He looks at how brutalization rather than civil socialization turns a military from our protectors to our terrorizers -- starting with harsh, degrading,even lethal hazing of cadets, on to ruthless interrogation of real enemies that creeps and then falls headlong into torture, then extra-legal detentions of civilian dissidents, then the torture and murder of civilians as a means of social repression and control, and with it coup attempts and martial law.

In this process, the military organization ceases to understand and obey the absolute requirement for great self-restraint by those who wield great firepower. It begins to believe its own prideful hype, and particularly in learning the unique potency of torture to destroy human will and rip apart the social fabric, the military begins to feel all-powerful. It no longer pledges allegiance to a nation or to democratic or broad social values, but becomes politicized and dedicated to protect only a few partisan values, or no values other than power and control for their own sake.

I may not be the first person to bring this matter about Mr. Alfred W. McCoy's book, particularly about the book cover. I do not know how authoritative he is about Philippine setting, but the display of the Philippine Flag on the book cover is WRONG. I have not read the book because I just chance upon it when I was browsing for another book. I hope this matter will be brought to the author's attention and that of the publisher as well. Simple, basic and fairly worthless

Apparently my opinion will differ with most of the others but I was stunned when I reached the conclusion in literally ten minutes. This is child's play advice - nothing ground breaking or revelatory. Seriously, do a simple search online and find the same info for free. The supplement section was particularly disappointing - "ginsing and pine pollen" - that's it? Save your money . Good topic - weak advice. Good luck. D.

Great information, little short

All together this book helped me realize important facts about testosterone I knew very little about. I enjoyed reading the facts: How males in society are becoming more out of shape and less energetic due to low counts of "Free Testosterone," how our diets directly affect these levels, and much more in regards to how to correct this crisis. All in all I was thrilled to read this book, but the cost of the book along with the length is the only reason why I rated it with 4 stars. The epidemic men face with the lack of proper nutrition should not be ignored, and this book directly highlights many of these facts and will point you in the right direction.

About the Author
MariAnne Dibbley has taught English/ESL for over 15 years in a variety of contexts, including university, middle school, and ESL school settings. In 1999, she established the California English Language Academy to teach ESL to the local community. During the school's ten years of operation, she frequently wrote her own curriculum. She has a Masters of Arts degree in Intercultural Communication from the University of California and is currently working on a PhD in Intercultural Education at Biola University.

Looking forward to using it

I have done a lot of ESL teaaching in Thailand and struggle especially when my student has zero English background; I have yet to see a circulumn that will work in this way! As a second-language learner myself I know how much better pictures work to build the base of language - the fall-back is typically reverting to explaining in the learners native language, and that method doesn't stick like making images in the brain that then get attached to words.

I fully expect to write another review of success. But the best part is the God-centered, solid bible teaching that is used to teach English! May many grow in love for God; may many become worshippers through this book! Which is even better than mastery of Eglish!

Not a Progressive Classroom Text

The author obviously put a lot of time and effort into this book. The pictures and printing quality are very good. However, I don't believe this is a book that a teacher would want to work through progressively with students. The level of the content on the pages is very inconsistent throughout. For example, page 66 covers transitive and intransitive verbs, while page 191 finally introduces "survival English" such as "please," "thank you," and "Excuse me." Some of the grammar explanations in the book get very technical and complicated- I am a certified ESL teacher but was unfamiliar with some of the terms used.

This book may work as a grammar reference for advanced ESL students, if the teacher wants to pick and choose pages to use in class. Also, some of the basic vocabulary pages could be used with beginning level students, but you would have to be careful not to confuse or discourage them with the more difficult content.

In general I did not care for the presentation of the Biblical content, as it seemed to jump back and forth between stories in the Old and New Testaments. However, there were a few pages that I did like, that seemed at an appropriate level for ESL students. I liked the story of the Good Samaritan on pg. 71 and the attributes of God on pg. 128. I suppose some of the Biblical content could be used as a reference for students, when level appropriate.

My favorite part of the book is the last section, written for teachers, with various classroom activities. There's a lot of good ideas here that I think would go over well in the classroom.

My suggestion for an ESL teacher looking to incorporate Biblical content into an ESL class would be to make use of some great resources in the students' native language, such as the film "The Hope" or "The Jesus film." Also, bilingual Bibles can be used in an ESL class as a great way to help students understand the Bible in their native language.

Learning and Teaching tool that is also a Work of Art

Not only is this book beautiful, like a piece of art, it has so much value! It is a one of a kind resource. Using the Bible and pictures to teach English is an amazing way to help people learn the language and learn about the Bible, God's word. I'm looking forward to taking this book with me to Kenya this month, and sharing it with the teachers at the school where I will be volunteering.

The worse religion book I have ever read!

This is one of the worst religion books, I have ever read! As a person who enjoys reading scripture, I wish the Catholic school my daughter attends had just stuck with the Bible and skipped this piece of ecumenical dribble. This book is completely out of touch with the grace and beauty of our youth and how they can be such an inspiration to us. It reads like it was written by someone who was an old cleric imagining what a teenager is, never having experienced one. The writer seems to guess at what would appeal to a teenager to read, instead of someone who has actually worked with teens or by a parent who has raised young adults. The book is scripturely inaccurate in several places, and I spend much time with my daughter looking up the real Bible passage, as to not confuse her understanding of what the Bible really teaches. We both find this book insulting to her intelligence and dumbed down as if it were poorly written for a forth grader. Please if you are an educator and love teaching youth, or if you are a parent as I am, please skip this book altogether and fight to have it removed from being a required religion textbook. The Bible as the written word of God, can stand on its own as a textbook, without any help from this lousy attempt of a book.
