First the physical book:
The book is as pictured on the product page. It is 9-3/8” x 7-3/8” x 5/8” and 261 pages (plus the forward). The covers are of average thickness and seem to stand the test of time. (My copy is a used library book and the covers are still in good shape.)
The interior paper is bright and the text and schematics are printed in very sharp black ink (there is no color except on the covers). On the downside the printing is so dark and sharp it bleeds through to the other side of the page more then on most books.
The chapter titles are listed in the upper corners so it is easy to find what you want on a quick flip through.
This is not an intro to electronics book; its and project book for intermediate hobbyists and assumes you already understand voltage, amperage, resistance, capacitance, and ICs in general. While the construction and operation of the circuits is explained, breadboard layouts are not included, so to actually build any of the circuits you will need the ability to build breadboard circuits directly from schematics (with pin shuffling).
On this point I want to say the projects are very well described, better then in most project books. The author goes as far as to give practical suggestions to common issues as to aid in troubleshooting. There is also a mini-test at the end of each chapter to make sure you understood the big points of the material.
It's always a question with a electronics book of this age if the parts are still available. So below I listed many of the ICs used for the projects in this book. This list probably isn't complete but it's a good representation of the parts used. Most can be found today either from a standard supply house or with a little effort at an online auction.
7805, 7812, 7905, 7912, LM317, LM337, LM340, LM383 (or TDA2002), LM723, LM741 (MC741), LM555, LM565, LM567, LM1456 (MC1456), CD4011, CD4017, CD4046, CD4050, CD4066, RC4136, N5556, 7400, 7404, 7474, 7490, 7493, and 74121.
In addition to the ICs above you will need miscellaneous resistors, diodes, transistors, and other common parts.
So why four stars?
The loss of the star is due to minor things and I would give it 4-1/2 stars if it were possible.
First, the ink bleed through on my copy is pretty distracting. I would have preferred if this book was available in a hardcover with thicker paper. Next, I didn't like the mini-test at the end of each chapter but they can easily be ignored so this isn't a big deal. I also felt some of the schematics should be bigger (See pg 92) and at places the layout of the book could be better.
So overall it's a solid book that delivers what the title promises. It's full of projects based on common ICs that the reader can actually build if they want to. And many of the projects (like the logic probe) are squarely aimed the reader base as they apt to be useful to a person starting out in electronics.
I found the power supply section to be especially good because he explains the circuit and construction in detail. Sure, you can download similar schematics from the web but rarely are they accompanied by and accurate in depth explanation like these are. A good explanation not only makes this project go better but lets you apply the methods used here to your other projects in the future.
Now a word on cost. My book was originally labeled $24.95 and I think that is probably a bit high for a 261 page paperback in the 90's. Most of the similar length books published by TAB and written by Delton Horn came in hardcover for a similar price. But I only paid a few dollars for this book used and for what I paid I am happy with it. I'll leave you to decide what it is worth to you and I do realize lots of people prefer paperbacks.
To sum it up...
I would not recommend this to someone totally new to electronics. For newbies I would recommend Make: Electronics: Learning Through Discovery by Charles Platt. It teaches you the basics of electronics as you build fun projects. Once you finish the Make book you should be ready for this one.
I would recommend this book to any intermediate hobbyist who it looking to make any of the projects listed in the chapters above. I would also recommend you look at any of the Easy Electronics Projects books by Delton Horn as their content is very similar to this book.
