This Book Will Harm Your Students; Please Do Not Buy It.

"Indeed, the interests of the oppressors lie in 'changing the consciousness of the oppressed, not the situation which oppresses them', for the more the oppressed can be led to adapt to that situation, the more easily they can be dominated". (Pedagogy of the Oppressed, page 74.)
I wish, so sincerely, that I could collect every copy of this book and destroy them all. This book - and the ideology that informs it - is racist, classist, and contributes to the continued marginalization of disenfranchised groups. Having read and studied the book in a graduate teacher education program, my best summary of Payne's philosophy is: we can fix poverty by teaching poor people to stop acting so poor and uneducated. (Biggest eye roll of all time).
Look up basically any peer-reviewed study or article written by the big voices in multicultural/social justice education. Shortcut: they're all extremely critical of Ruby Payne's work. Although she has a reputation with schools as being quite progressive, her work is actually doing a lot of harm. In one study, researchers found that teachers who have been exposed to Payne's work actually are much more likely to perpetuate racism and classism in their schools.

It also turns out that Payne's work, unlike the work of her critics, is based on absolutely no real research - she admits that she has not engaged in any structured inquiry, that no data exist to back her theories, and that her work is based on her own casual observations. This is in contrast to almost endless critical studies of her work, which go through rigorous peer-reviews and are verifiable and reproducible. These critical, scholarly reviews are pretty unanimous in their conclusion that Payne's work is doing much more harm than good and that, in order to serve and support our students, we have to dethrone her from the position of "The Leading Expert on the Mindsets of Poverty, Middle Class, and Wealth" - a title she gave herself (!), because she is self-published (self-published because no one else would publish this garbage). Mind-boggling.
Please do your students justice and try a "Rethinking Schools" publication, or "Reaching and Teaching Students in Poverty" by Paul Gorski. These are excellent. These are for the good of students and society, not for the coffers of some rich, ignorant, racist, unqualified CEO.

Great Resource!

I am a retired attorney and now a substitute teacher and saw this book in a teacher's classroom and then ordered it. It is a great resource for understanding and communicating with not only students in the classroom but also adults, in my opinion, when crossing "class" lines and the associated cultures (regardless of race). Even after 30 years of law practice with clients from all walks of life, the "hidden rules" set out in the book were eye-opening. I have recommended it to several friends.

Builds on and Perpetuates Stereotypes

This is a terrible book! The author claims to base her work on research; however, the research would not stand up if it were peer reviewed. The book is self-published. The ideas promote deficit ideology and blames the victims (poor people) rather than exploring systemic causes of poverty. It is unfortunate that educators choose work like this rather than critical work that attempts to dismantle the systems that create and maintain poverty.
