The translation of Dr. Usui's Reiki handbook is a a very significant development for the Reiki community. At last we have proof that Reiki is not an oral tradition and that Dr. Usui gave out written material to all his students. I find the exercises to be useful and that my Reiki healing abilities have increased. The explainations and the insights about the origins of Reiki are also helpful. The color pictures of the hand positions Dr. Usui rcommends for various illnesses and conditions are wonderful. I have tried some of them and found them to work. I am very pleased that we now have such detailed information from the founder of the Usui system to use in our Reiki practices. Thank you Arjava and Chetna for taking the time to write this very important book.

Mediocre; yes, there's basic info... but the book doesn't give much else of information. It's flimsy and too short... I am a Reiki Master and under the lineage of Dr.Mikao Usui... possibly number 11 or 12 under the Reiki Masters... This book has basic info but misses the nitty and gritty type of info that is dives deeper. Disappointing; this should not reflect on the seller, but towards the book specifically. NEXT!

Wonderful New Information

I just finished reading through this delightful book and found it so informative. Knowing it was written using Dr. Usui's own text for his students reassured me that this was the real thing. We, as Reiki practioners have been led to believe that Reiki was taught only orally and there was no written text. It is amazing to find that this is not true - there were textbooks that were used as tools during class. It has certainly been a new tool I will use in my practice because I was not taught specific treatments for certain conditions. This book spells it out, complete with pictures of hand positions and explanations. It is like a breath of fresh air for me and I feel much closer to the source of the rediscovery of this ancient practice.

About the Author

Ruben Guzman is a United States Swimming (USS) coach for age-group swimmers. He has coached swimming for over 35 years at the summer recreational, high school, collegiate, and competitive year-round USS levels.

Over the years, Guzman’s teams have won numerous championships, and dozens of his swimmers have gone on to compete at the collegiate level. His athletes have advanced to nationals and Olympic trials. Recognized worldwide as an expert in stroke technique, Guzman served as the stroke specialist for the California Capital Aquatics team and worked closely with retired head coach Mike Hastings, an assistant coach on the 1992 U.S. Olympic team.

In 2008, what was to be his final year of coaching at the high school level, Guzman’s swim team at Christian Brothers High School (Sacramento, California) qualified 22 of its 33 swimmers for the state championships. Ever the teacher, in 2016, Guzman came out of retirement to coach his son’s high school team. He continues to conduct clinics and trainings for swim teams and coaches.

Guzman holds a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from California Lutheran University and a master’s degree in public health from UCLA, specializing in behavioral sciences and health promotion.

In addition to his swimming expertise, Guzman is author of the book Evolving Health and is a professional speaker and consultant specializing in leadership development, communication, health promotion, and productivity for leaders and their organizations.

Ivan Castro is a graphic designer based in Barcelona, Spain, specializing in calligraphy, lettering, and typography. His work involves everything from advertising to editorial, packaging, and logo design, from big companies to gig posters. Even though he claims to have no specific style, one could say that he has a strong respect for history and popular culture. He has been working in the field for 15 years, and teaching calligraphy and lettering for 10 years in the main design schools of Barcelona. He travels, giving workshops and lectures at design festivals and conferences. His clients included Bau Design College of Barcelona, Born Losers, Congreso Internacional de Tipograf�a, Iconographic Magazine, Korero Press, Lee Productions, Little Victor, Los Tiki Phantoms, and El Toro Records. Ken Barber works for House Industries in Yorklyn, Delaware, a prolific type foundry. He also conducts lettering workshops at Maryland Institute, College of Art.

My new favorite. Comprehensive, fun-to-read, in-depth lettering guide.

Wherever you are in your lettering journey, this book will teach you. Unless you know everything and therefore aren't considering buying it in the first place. There are those.

I've studied and read many books and online tutorials and took Sean McCabe's Learn Lettering course, but this (aside from the business aspects of that course) is the best resource I've found. You'll learn to write different scripts, how to draw letters and then some heavy duty information on how to use that knowledge to design custom type. There's some history (which he manages to make interesting) of type to help you understand WHY different scripts are what they are.

As a calligrapher, the most helpful part for me was learning to morph my calligraphy into custom type. That was an eye-opener.

Reading the book is a little like having a conversation; Castro is warm and funny and not stiff and dry like many books on this and similar subjects. He explains the "why" many things that I knew to be true but hadn't questioned. He's just really really good at explaining stuff. Lots of aha! moments for me.

Surpasses my already-high expectations

My hopes for this book were already high, and WOW! This book is incredible. This is a thorough, thoughtful, and structured introduction to custom lettering. Castro walks you through some important fundamentals, helping you understand of letter forms, develop a useful sense of aesthetics, and shows you how to bring it together into actual execution. There is a lot of care and detail in this book, but it's also very easy to follow and understand; it's evident that Castro is an experienced teacher. He's put a lot of effort into setting the reader up for success. I cannot wait to dig into this, I feel like I'm going to be building some real knowledge and skills, and having a lot of fun doing it!

Now that Bill Watterson has retired from drawing syndicated cartoons, the only way to get our Calvin and Hobbes fixes is through his book collections. The 10th Anniversary Book is particularly notable, because in addition to getting some of his most wonderful cartoons, we also gain a sense of Watterson as a person.

Approximately one-tenth of the book contains essays about matters great and small--from cartooning to life--and stories about the inspiration behind some of his greatest strips. Not surprisingly, Watterson shines through as a being of considerable integrity, and the cartoons gain in depth thanks to his commentary. And, of course, the cartoons in the other 90% of the book are alternately side-splitting hilarious or touching. Happy Anniversary, Bill, and good luck with whatever it is you are doing now!

No one has captured children's world view and sense of imagination in cartoon strip form as well as Watterson. Nor applied it so strikingly to comment on adult life and attitudes or the general absurdity of the world in which we live... A fine compliment to the C&H enthusiast's collection

Watterson hand-picked each Sunday strip in this book and provided a 3-5 line commentary on most of the strips. The chosen strips are split about halfway between the old format and the later, "non-bordered" format, and the selected Sunday strips are certainly representative of C&H's style and character.
Some of the commentary is very similar to what's found in the 10th anniv. book, but most of it is newly informative and interesting. As an aspiring comic-stripper, I found Watterson's comments very useful in bettering my approach to the design, coloring and plot of a comic strip, more so than what he says in the 10th anniv. book.
The collection begins with an essay from Mr. Watterson about his perspective on C&H 6 years removed, and it's probably my favorite part of the book. Also included are the non-colored sketches of each strip on its neighboring page. Since these sketches are reprinted in color, you can see the erasures, griddings and white-outs; a nice touch, for sure.
Comic strip enthusiasts are going to grab this book no matter what I say (and well they should), but more casual readers may be happier reading this book at the bookstore for free instead. It's short and contains comics already printed in the many C&H collections, but it's certainly suited for the C&H fan who wants more. I think it's very kind of Mr. Watterson, a man who never wanted the fame C&H garnered him, to offer his time and comments for this collection. As a lover of the comic arts, I genuinely thank him for helping make this book happen.

A great comic by one of the best!

There is nothing to dislike about Calvin and Hobbes! My six year old has learned to read better because of all of Calvin's adventures and imaginings (if that's a word). It's been great to see him grab hold of a book and work through some of Calvin's large vocabulary. Granted, some of the more mature expressions that Calvin talks about are well above most six year old heads and I was questioned several times about what Calvin meant in a few of the comics. But as far as reading material, Bill Watterson is one of the best comic creators ever.

The book itself is quality and well worth the price. My son gives most books a good workout and this one holds together quite well. The binding is solid and the paperback cover has held up very well.

Great for artists and a must for the hardcore fan

I own every C&H book and treasury and, succumbing to sloth, I copied the same review 12 times on Amazon to avoid writing 12 different reviews. I am not doing that for this one because fans should know that this book is a bit different. It came to be as a result of an exhibition Waterson did in Ohio and has more of an artsy feel. It also has brief commentary by the cartoonist at the bottom of each page along with each set of Sunday panels. The format is a double print of each Sunday page. On the left-hand page you see it in black and white sketch version and on the right-hand page the final version in color. The left-hand side has eraser-marks and white out and other details you dont see in the finished color version. Personally, I love it and I am not really an artist at all. The quality of the book adds greatly to the appeal with nice super high-quality paper and amazing detail and crisp printing technique. The pages are not like most C&H books, with a matte finish. These are glossy and slick with great details. When my copy arrived I almost thought I had accidentally been sent a presentation copy or something, but all the ones I have seen are like mine; they just did a great job with the printing and formatting. Now I wish all my C&H books came with this kind of detail and sharp images, but you can't have everyting, and C&H is not so much about glossy images anyway. Having said that, I feel that this book allows the reader to see and appreciate the beauty in many of Watterson's Sunday pages. The black and whites also show a lot of detail you won't get in other C&H books. Of course, you also get a bunch of really good cartoons, as usual, but there are only half as many, since every one takes up two full pages with the two versions. To sum up, the material is old, the commentary is new and the quality is great. Get the other C&H books first, but then consider this one to spice up your collection with something a bit different.

Good book

This book is very good, especially to those who are interested in Russia's foreign policy since the 80s. The book make connection between the internal political situation, ideologies inside Russia and its implications on it's foreign policy. The book examines the different approaches to the status of Russia and to the foreign policy it should take, in the eyes of the different organizations of the Russian political spectrum such as Pragmatists, Statists, Conservatives, Nationalists, Liberals etc.

The book draws on the constructivist tradition of the international relations school to explain shifts in Russian politics starting from the early 1990s up to the present time. Not only it gives a great theoretical framework to think about Russian foreign policy, but also provides a detailed account of the country's international moves throughout the post-Cold War period. A must-read for students and profs. of Russian politics.

The book analyzes several historical examples and concludes that we cannot understand Russian foreign policy without understanding its culture. Written by someone who actually knows Russia very well, and not by so-called Russian experts who do not speak a word of Russian.

Jefferson W. Tester is Croll Professor of Sustainable Energy Systems at Cornell University. Elisabeth M. Drake is Emeritus Researcher at the MIT Energy Initiative. Michael J. Driscoll is Professor Emeritus of Nuclear Science and Engineering at MIT. Michael W. Golay is Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering at MIT. William A. Peters is Executive Director of the Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies at MIT.

Well written but somewhat dated

This was a well written text book that gives an introduction to a great number of important fields. It does a particularly good job giving a fair treatment to some options that are often overlooked in books on sustainable energy such as geothermal and nuclear energy. It also gives a good background in the economics of electricity and liquid fuels.

It is however already quite dated. The book was published right before the price of oil started to soar, and completely didn't see it coming. Many statements support the idea that oil will be cheap for many decades to come. They certainly were not alone in not seeing this coming, but it is sometimes hard to take them seriously on other subjects when they keep referring back to the low price of oil.

Extremely useful reference, if a bit dated

I've been working in the energy field for the past few years, and this is one of the few references I've found that describes all of our energy options with real depth. Information is well organized and systematically laid out. The book is, as others have pointed out, unfortunately already outdated.

Good reference book; not necessarily great for students entering the field

As a student with little to no experience in the field, some topics and language can be overwhelming. As an electrical engineer, I have some background into the technologies presented. However, some concepts are either presented lightly or ambiguously. The later chapters cover some technologies in-depth and present their uses and future well. However, the intro chapters present a steep learning curve for the reader.

Would recommend as a reference.
