A prized addition and annoying

On the surface, this a beautiful, oversized book which is exactly as advertised-- an encyclopedic listing of outlaw motorcycle clubs worldwide. Each club has a little listing containing SOME information. Some have a box containing more info-- date, place of origin, locations, club colors (actual colors-- white, blue gold,etc.) and description of the club patch... and there SOME very nice photographs of SOME patches. Which brings me to my major beef-- NOT ENOUGH! It would have been very nice if at least most of the clubs had their patches pictured. Considering how many clubs have websites and E-mail addresses, this does'nt seem to be too big an expectation... What IS here is very nice---some beautiful photography and some essays by clubbers.. BUT---another beef, there are some inaccuracies and incompletes (nit picking? perhaps.)
1)FILTHY FEW is sub group within the Hells Angels MC ONLY, and a club that stole the name in New Zealand. It is NOT a "common idiom throughout the motorcycle culture".
2)The NUGGETS MC has not flown the described patch of "a beer drinking rabbit on a motorcycle" since it's very early days. Since the late 60's, they've flown their current patch--- a gold nugget with a motorcycle inside. They rode full dressers back then and morphed into choppers--an interesting fact not mentioned.
3)The Mongrel Mob of NZ should not have been included--- they wear cuts with patches but they DON'T RIDE.
4)The Gypsy Jokers is listed as a"classic club" and it is--- their patch is listed as a grinning skull... gee whiz, that's the Australian club who just appropriated the name and made up their own patch. The Aussies have since made a connection to the originals and adopted the real top and bottom rockers but kept the skull center patch. The REAL Gypsy Joker patch was and is a walking jester--- that's a real boner on the author's part. An annoying incomplete--"Curious about that demonic critter on the Pagan's patch?" sez the back cover and the blurb on Amazon--- Yeah, it's the norse fire demon Surtur or dark Surt, BUT they DON"t say that it's a direct lift from a 1963 issue of Marvel comic's JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY in a TALES OF ASGARD story drawn by one of the greatest comic book artists of the 20th century- JACK KIRBY. Despite these criticisms, it's still a cool book...
One really funny feature is a reprint of a 1960's cop manuel on outlaw bikers--- so THAT'S where they got the idea that I had a shotgun rigged up in my handlebars!

Not what I expected.

The title of this book is a bit misleading. When I saw that it is an Encyclopedia, I assumed that there would be information about the various OMC's; history, notable members, significant events about criminal involvement, etc.
The book is merely an identification of OMC colors or patches with very little information about the clubs. My bad for making that assumption, but the book would be more fairly referred to as a OMC colors or patch picture book. I wanted the book for more of a historical purpose, something to show the evolution of the clubs, their conflicts, alliances and the dynamics of their criminal involvement. I should have done a little more research before I bought the book.

Title suggest much more than really is

It's not One Percenter Encyclopedia but, in best case, List of Outlaw Motorcycle Clubs. Esch club has description, shorter or longer. There is also a police manual to bikers from the 70's and a short bibliography, with a short book descriptions, on subject
List of clubs is incomplete. For example there are no Satan's Angels, Rebels(from Canada), Stray Satans, Straight Satans etc.

But one percent bikerdom there is not only list of clubs.

I've expected an explanation of terms connected with one-percenters like "mama", "old lady", "run", "originals" etc,
list of names(like Sonny Barger, Mom Boucher, Walter Stadnick to name the few) of people connected with biker scene(also names like Christine Deese), events like Altamont Concert, Milperra Massacre, Shedden Massacre, Lennoxville Massacre. Also biker books(with much detailed descriptions than in above mentioned book review) and evemtually biker movies would have been welcomed too.

Alas, it looks that I've expected too much. So only 3 stars.

Augustine of Hippo (Latin: Aurelius Augustinus Hipponensis; 13 November 354 – 28 August 430), also known as Saint Augustine, Saint Austin, Blessed Augustine, and the Doctor of Grace (Latin: Doctor gratiae), was an early Christian theologian and philosopher whose writings influenced the development of Western Christianity and Western philosophy. Understanding Augustine

Augustine is an interesting person to say the least. Modern readers may have difficulty in understanding Augustine, for his world was very different but very much the same as ours. Augustine begins as a Christian then turns to Manichaeism. Manichaeism, like Gnosticism is competing with "orthodox" Christianity. Augustine is from the breadbasket of the Roman empire, North Africa. Thagaste, in modern day Algiers was a Christian city very different from modern Muslim Algeria. His mother Monica had a strong Christian background and looked to the day Augustine would "come around" back to Christianity. Growing up a "wunderkind" and attending the best schools gave Augustine a sort of "cockiness" to his character. Augustine had a relationship with a woman and a child by her (an almost "modern" relationship). It is in the parallels in our world (American empire) and the late Roman empire that is relevant for us today. Augustine, who is a deep thinker begins to ponder his own life and the life of the empire he lives in. He ponders the nature of sin, time and death. He comes back to Christianity and is baptized with his son. The death of his close friend and then son Adeodatus affect him greatly. These events, along with the "decaying" empire that is around him give rise to his work "City of God." Written in "Books" rather than chapters may seem odd to us moderns. His book Confessions is not an easy read for modern readers, but for those who seek his wisdom it is there.

I do love the conversational tone of this translation

This is the edition I have decided to read after reading many reviews for other translations. I do love the conversational tone of this translation, but it still captures Augustine's cerebral and philosophical and even contemplative, rambling, beautifully poetic ramblings. The references to verses in the bible in parentheses as opposed to end notes really is useful, and Augustine's command of Scripture is unparalleled. You get the idea that he is at both writing his true confessions, honest as they are about sex and other sins, as well as a love letter to God, a philosophy treatise, and autobiography, a testimony of his journey to Christianity, and a historical capsule of the life of a young, educated, almost-aristocratic, young man in the early church in Greece and Rome. This book should be considered high priority reading for anyone interested in learning about Christianity, its origins, as well as those studying in more serious intent, such as theology.

Translation got in the way of comprehension

First off, you can't argue with the price, so give the book a shot and if the translation is too archaic for you, try a different version.

In the end, I couldn't handle the translation. I read the first 7 books with this translation, but the translation got in the way of understanding the book.

Other reviewers are right, the Thees and Thous start to disappear and you start to get used to the verb structure, especially if you read it slowly aloud. However, it's much harder to get used to the archaic words (like "fain") and sentences can be a bit convoluted. With effort, you can understand the text, but I got tired from internally converting it to modern English. I'd rather spend my efforts understanding the message of the book, not deciphering the text.

Thanks for helping to unravel some of the Health Care issues.

I found the book very easy to use. The format allows the reader to pick and choose the sections they are interested in at that time. I found the Medicare section very clear and the information contained in that chapter helped to confirm the decision our family made regarding that subject. Whenever the subject got too serious or detailed (and there are a lot of details involving Health Care ) the author managed to infuse some humor and I appreciated that! This is not a book that you read once and put away- I think it's a reference and guide book (as the title suggests) that you will refer to through the years as you move through each phase of Health Care in the United States. Thank you for making a rather dull subject understandable, and interesting. I especially liked the facts you included about where U.S. Health Care ranks among other countries and the statistics regarding children's health and immunizations.

The Definitive Book

Thsi is the definitive handbook for navigating the U.S. healthcare system as it stands today. It should be a textbook in every class on public health. I believe that it is specific enough to give the reader a clear understanding of and a path navigating the labrynith of the system; but, general enough to stand the test of time. Ultimately, it will have to be undated to account for the changing landscape of this complex system. Winter has succeeded in producing a masterpiece!

Where do I start?? First, don't be put off by the topic. The author does a good (not boring!) job in laying out the forces at work in the current health care market. The book is thoroughly researched, has details, and remains enjoyably readable. Each section covers a different topic - if one isn't interesting today, it is simple to flip to the next section and keep on reading.
This book is different than the tomes on health care policy. It presents information in a readable manner and is meant for the average consumer - both goals are touchdown-worthy! Great job by Ms. Winter!

I am delighted with the depth of the subject!

I was curious about anatomy & physiology in my Bearded dragon. i have found and am finding so much more. It is for the scientifically minded, but as an RN with some science back round, it is perfect for what I wanted. i wanted to know more than just care and feeding for my lizard that you find in in all the libraries around here. I wanted just reptiles, not reptiles AND amphibians. I wanted health care issues in detail. This book is geared toward veterinarians, so it has all that I wanted and more. My free time and breaks is an explorations of a new world for me. I'm giddy:)

For Any Herpetologist or Reptile Expert

I can assure you that you will not be disappointed. Lots of colorful pictures and covering venipuncture, drawing blood samples, giving injections, all sorts of ailments and diseases covering, how to restrain and work with all species, even venomous reptiles! The pics are very detailed and show you 'how to do this and that.' There is no other better reptile book available out there. This is it! This is highly recommended for vet techs and zoos and vets, etc. It covers diagnostics and with pictures in color and step-by-step guides, and where the veins are located and where to give shots, how to give meds, feeding and nutrition, proper care, handling, restraint, force-feeding, intensive care, you name it.

Drawing for Beginners: A Step-by-Step Guide to Successful Drawing

This book is wonderful for beginners like me who wants to learn drawing on his/her own pace.
There are four subjects of techniques: wildlife, people, countrysides, and buildings.
What draw my attention and interest is the wildlife section because I want to learn to draw
birds, all kind of birds. This book has many examples. Then the book opens me up to draw fox,
trees, houses, landscapes ... I just started my retirement and this book will definitely help me enjoy
the free time that I never had before to have fun and enrichment.

Do Not Buy This Book If You Want To Learn To Draw

The ad for this book is not only deceitful; it is an out and out lie! If you can not draw but want to learn how, buy another book as this one doesn't tell you anything about how to draw. This book might possibly be useful for an individual who already can draw and wants to become better but it gives no instruction to a beginner. The back of the book states "will teach the absolute beginner how to draw" BUT THAT IS SO FAR FROM THE TRUTH! The ad is a complete come-on, they are defrauding the public.

Excellent book for learning to draw

Drawing for Beginners is an excellent instruction book. The illustrations and written directions show how to draw using directional strokes and shading. Good for learning to move beyond flat-looking line drawing. Gives an overview of drawing tools and paper. Topics covered include: light and shade; composition; proportion and shapes; measuring in drawing; space and perspective; drawing flowers, plants, landscape, skies, trees, water, to name just a few. I especially wrote this review because I do find this book to be significantly valuable and, thus, was quite surprised by the one other review of this excellent book.
