Good Medical Text

This was my medical school textbook for a four week module on hematology. What I liked most about the book is that it only presented essential information. The absence of superfluous text allowed me the time to regularly read the assigned chapters while also studying the rest of the material for this class and other classes. I also found the book to be relatively easy to comprehend. (However, this is definitely not on the layman's level, and a good requisite knowledge of a first year medical school curriculum is necessary before reading.) Virtually every pathologic aspect of hematology is covered in the text: hemopoietic development, anemias, lymphomas and leukemias, coagulation disorders, etc. It also covers some treatments for the various diseases and pathologic processes. This book was an integral part to my studying and understanding hematology. It will definitely sit on my reference shelf for years to come.

One of the best med school texts

This is by far amongst the best medical school texts (not incl. board review stuff) out there. The 4th ed. covers all areas of hematology in a lucid, non-verbose style. I found it easy to read assigned sections for my Heme course in a timely and efficient manner. There is a good blend of pathophysiology and biochemical mechanisms essential to understanding disease processes; however, the presentation is straightforward. The text has frequent color cartoons, images, graphs and tables, which helped me visualize concepts. Moreover, modern diagnostics and treatment rationale are also adequately explaned. Overall, I am really glad i purchased this book, and plan to keep it for future reference.

About the Author
Peter G. Northouse, Ph.D, is a professor of communication in the School of Communication at Western Michigan University. For more than 30 years, he has taught leadership, interpersonal, and organizational communication on both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition to publications in professional journals, he is the author of Introduction to Leadership: Concepts and Practice, Second Edition and coauthor of Health Communication: Strategies for Health Professionals, Third Edition. His scholarly and curricular interests include models of leadership, leadership assessment, ethical leadership, and leadership and group dynamics. He has worked as a consultant in a variety of areas, including leadership development, leadership education, conflict management, and health communication. He holds a doctorate in speech communication from the University of Denver and a master’s and bachelor’s degree in communication education from Michigan State University.

A Regrettably Biased Survey

There is much to like and to dislike about Northouse's book. Its main strengths are the breadth and currency of its survey of leadership theories and its simple and practical organization. On the other hand, Northouse privileges and effectively endorses certain theories over others; his rambling and gushing review of authentic leadership (the longest chapter he writes) reads like a T.V. commercial, while his treatment of the much more extensive research on leadership traits is relatively short and frequently dismissive. His bias, along with occasionally clunky prose and endless in-text APA citations, is inappropriate in an expensive text book such as this. Ironically, the two best chapters--that is to say, authoritative, broad and yet detailed, and more capably written--are not written by him, but by invited experts. One gets the strong feeling that the author has grown tired of many of the theories in his text. My recommendation to the publisher would be to keep the format but have each chapter written by an expert in the related field, and to conclude with an attempt to identify any common threads or crucial differences among the many theories. In summary, this is not a bad place to start for people interested in reading about leadership theory, but it is by no means the place to end.

Excellent basic leadership text

This is a well written textbook that I am using for a graduate course I teach called Leadership Perspectives and Practices. It is far superior to the book that I previously used in both format and style. Author Peter Northouse writes clearly and concisely in a book that provides a basic overview of all major leadership theories, as well as additional chapters on timely topics such as women and leadership, authentic leadership and culture and leadership.

Each chapter includes several short case studies that illustrate the principles covered, along with sections that point out the strengths and criticisms of each theoretical approach. The chapters are well sequenced and the book has an author index as well as a subject index.

I highly recommend this fifth edition of Leadership Theory and Practice for use as a text or for anyone who is seeking a book that provides a serious study of core leadership principles and their application.

I purchased this for a grad school course. The price was so much cheaper from Amazon, it fact the new book was less than the price of the campus bookstore used book. The book itself is very easy to read and the author provides definitions and explanations that are easy to remember and differentiate. About the Author
Shane Filan formed the band Westlife with Mark Feehily, Kian Egan, Nicky Byrne, and Brian McFadden in 1998. Managed by Louis Walsh and signed by Simon Cowell, Westlife sold over 44 million records worldwide, and accumulated 14 No.1 singles. In 2012, the band went their separate ways, and in 2013 Shane launched his solo career to critical acclaim.

I loved the book

I loved the book. It was very interesting to know what happened to him. I have been a huge fan of Westlife since 2002 but after they went separate ways there was a period of time when I did not know anything about them so when I knew all the trouble Shane went through I could not believe it. Reading this book made me realize that like any other human in this planet they had issues, difficult situations and just because they are pop stars does not mean they are perfect or have the perfect life. I admire what Shane wanted to do for his community. It sure went wrong but I think he was brave enough because he never tried to avoid his responsabilities. A very honest book. I like the way he tells the story and how much we loved and still loves Westlife and his relationship with his wife and kids, I think that played a huge part on how he survived to all those things. I cannot image how stressful it was for him to know he owned all that money and still had to go and work and smile for us his fans and everything. Its just amazing. For those who are fans and for those who are not, this book is a clear example of perserverance, hard work, family, love, and that even if we make mistakes in life, we all always have a second chance to make it right, to do it better.

Misleading Pictures? Deceiving Bookseller ? Or Just Me?

I bought one of these so called "Signed 1ST edition" sold by "Powells Books" at $9.95 just to find out that except for a printed signature of the author on one of the title pages, this edition has no difference with the other copy printed by FSG which I bought from "Alibris" at $0.99. It's explained in the copyright pages of both of these copies I bought that "A signed first edition of this book has been printed privately by The Franklin Library" , which I presumed is referring to the edition shown in the pictures here. Though I don't mind keeping a copy of the so called "Signed 1ST edition" printed by FSG at the price I paid for, it is obvious that what I meant to buy is the luxuriously leather bound edition printed by The Franklin Library as shown in this particular offer through Amazon. So, if you are a Amazon beginner like me, watch out!

Color is addressed to artists and art students in all media, in both fine and applied arts. It provides an informative but non-dogmatic introduction to the many different approaches to understanding color, including aesthetics, science, psychology, and history. Illustrations for the chapters on color concepts are taken from all media. Special aesthetic and practical considerations for color usage in each medium—such as ways that graphic designers use and specify printers' inks—are also explored. The realities of color use are accentuated by direct quotes from working artists. Technical terms are carefully defined in the text and also in a glossary. Those appearing in the glossary are printed in boldface when first introduced in the text. Special Features of the Fourth Edition

This fourth edition of Color reflects the tremendous range of color choices in the studio and the marketplace. There are now millions of colors available through computer graphics, more than the human eye can even distinguish. The section on computer-generated colors includes the complications of color matching when designers are working with both computer and printing technologies. Color choices in such crafts fields as ceramics, glass, and fibers are also mushrooming as they cross the soft boundary between fine and applied arts. Optical color effects continue to be an area of artistic experimentation, and these are illustrated and discussed in detail.

In the midst of these burgeoning choices, students are given a clear and solid foundation for understanding uses of color. Some 35 lively new images have been added to this edition, from cave paintings to twenty-first century virtual reality installations. Illustrations of points under discussion reflect the great variety in color applications, including historic and contemporary paintings, sculpture, installation pieces, crafts, photographs, advertisements, cartoons, commercial design, computer art, video, architecture, landscape design, interior design, and clothing. The work of women and multicultural art are naturally interwoven throughout the text.

For this edition, new visual demonstrations have been added, such as the effects of different lighting sources, reflective qualities of different surfaces, the Bezold Effect, and the phenomenon of color constancy. There is new material on the emotional and physiological effects of different hues, and on the spatial effects of colors. Cutting-edge virtual reality and video installations are illustrated and discussed. Website design and current printing technologies are included in updated discussions of computer-based art. Technical sections have been modified for greater clarity and ease of understanding. Technical material is provided in ways that can form take-off points for artists' own explorations of the intriguing world of color.

A special characteristic of this book is its extensive use of artists' own words about their use of color. More such quotations have been incorporated into this edition, and a new feature has been added: artists' quotations introducing each chapter.

Another special new feature of this edition is an appendix of Studio Color Problems. These comprise a great treasury of practical experiments with color based on the experiential teaching methods of the great colorist Josef Albers. Those using his experiential method might like to assign the first two chapters of the text to develop a general orientation and a basic vocabulary before launching into studio work, and then continue with the more theoretical and practical material introduced later in the book once students have made some discoveries on their own. Professor Zelanski is a former student of Albers and has found this method highly successful in four decades of teaching. Acknowledgements

Mystery of Color Solved For Me!

This book was required text for a color theory class I took recently. For years I've been looking for information on color but could not find anything beyond the basics, usually associated with painting/art books. This book is all- encompassing: information about various color theories, perceptions of color, color and light, color in printing and more. It is full of examples, pictures, graphs, charts. I came away with the information that I knew must be out there! I would recommend this book to any color student. Mine is dog-eared!

Brilliant book on Color Theory!

This book is a must read for anyone studying the visual arts.

This is a brilliant book. He is a brilliant artist. I studied under Paul Zelanski at the University of Connecticut, School of Fine Art. He used to have a lot of fun with us during class critiques. A favorite saying of his was "You know, there is no such thing as an ugly color. But THIS... THIS comes pretty close (pointing to something hanging on the studio wall)!" Then he'd launch into a wondeful dissertation on the theory and practice of color. I learned a great deal from him. You will too from his book.

too useful to sell

I always re-sell all my textbooks on amazon. This was my most expensive textbook and I was really looking forward to getting some of my money back at the end of the semester. Surprisingly though, I've decided to hold on to it throughout my time at art school. It's usefulness is worth far more than $60.
