One of the most intriguing questions facing modern science is the inner workings of the human brain. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a powerful tool used to study the human brain in action. The data produced from mapping the active processes within the brain present many challenges to statisticians, computer scientists, engineers and other data analysts, due to their complex structure and the ever-increasing sophistication of the scientific questions being posed by researchers. This book represents the first in-depth discussion of statistical methodology, which it couples with an introduction to the scientific background needed to understand the data.

Starting from the basic science - where fMRI data come from, why they are so complicated, and the role statistics can play in designing and interpreting experiments - the book gives a detailed survey of the numerous methods that have been applied in the last fifteen years. The analysis of fMRI data features many of the major issues of concern in modern statistics, such as high dimensionality, multiple testing, and visualization. The array of techniques examined in the book ranges from the simple two-sample t-test and the general linear model to hierarchical spatiotemporal models, multivariate methods such as principal components analysis, and Bayesian approaches as they have been used in fMRI. Software, including descriptions of the most popular freeware packages and their capabilities, is also discussed. This book offers researchers who are interested in the analysis of fMRI data a detailed discussion from a statistical perspective that covers the entire process from data collection to the graphical presentation of results. The book is a valuable resource for statisticians who want to learn more about this growing field, and for neuroscientists who want to learn more about how their data can be analyzed.

Nicole A. Lazar is Professor of Statistics at the University of Georgia and affiliated faculty of the Center for Health Statistics, University of Illinois at Chicago. Anyone contemplating involvement in an employment tribunal, whether practitioner or litigant, should read this book, or at least have it to hand for reference. Indispensible for the practitioner, its clarity and readability make it immediately accessible, either for those interested in bringing their own cases before employment tribunals, (see Chapter 2 `Getting advice'), or those who would prefer to brief counsel. Whether you're a practitioner or not, this book, published by Bloomsbury Professional, is an excellent guide to the ways in which tribunals operate and the powers they have at their disposal.

The authors, Payne, White and Dixey, all members of the specialist employment law team at 5 Essex Court, bring, literally, a wealth of experience and indeed a refreshingly logical approach to tackling the often formidable challenges of tribunals. As they point out, employment law is a complex area and is fast becoming more so as employment tribunals continually become more popular as a means of resolving employment disputes.

...FOR GIVING AWAY THE ENDING OF THE NOVEL.

Here's a rule for all book reviewers: DO NOT GIVE AWAY THE ENDING TO THE NOVEL. That's something readers may want to discover for themselves!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and, like others, found myself simultaneously entranced and infuriated by Sutter Keely. Sutter is, for all of his faults,a likable person, but the world is moving past him while he's standing still: his best friend Ricky is moving past all of their partying and wild times and into a serious romantic relationship; the other students at school are looking past the "now" and into the future of college and work; even Sutter's own family is moving on in their own ways, while Sutter deludes himself that the Spectacular Now is enough for him.

"Voice" in YA novels is everything, and this novel certainly has that: Sutter Keely is a very familiar character (we all remember "that guy" from high school) and yet is uniquely his own person.

Highly recommended for both teens and adults: this novel is by turns warm, witty, wise, and heartbreaking.

Oh, and one more time: REMOVE THE SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL REVIEW OR ELSE WARN THAT IT SPOILS THE ENDING.

Not Spectacular at all

There were parts of this story that made me laugh out loud, but I was let down by the ending. There was no redemption for the characters, they didn't grow or change or improve their lives in any way. It just sort of ended. I was left feeling terribly for the characters, angry that one character had been dragged down into the drunkenness of the main character, disappointed that they couldn't rise above their issues. I don't need a happily ever after, but this bleak end to the story left me wondering why anyone would bother making this into a movie.

Really good, and brutal story: The movie is a travesty in that there is almost no connection between the actual characters as described and this book. On the other hand, that made it easy to read, because I forgot that I saw the movie first, a page into reading because of the differences.

About the Author
Lisa A. Keister is a professor of sociology and the Director of the Markets and Management Program at Duke University. She conducts research on wealth inequality, asset accumulation and the causes of each. She is the author of Getting Rich: America's New Rich and How They Got There (Cambridge University Press, 2005) and Wealth in America (Cambridge University Press, 2000). Her research on Chinese corporations and the country's economic transition appeared in her book Chinese Business Groups (2000) as well as various articles.

Darby E. Southgate is an assistant professor of sociology at Los Angeles Valley College and a research consultant. Her primary research interests are poverty, education and culture. Her research investigates the intersection of socioeconomic status, education and culture. She has authored numerous entries on culture, specifically on music and society. She also consults for agencies aiming to reduce homelessness and poverty through education.

About the Author

Toyoko Imae joined National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taiwan, as a chair professor in April 2009, immediately after retiring from Keio University, Japan. She has also held the position of professor emeritus at Nagoya University, Japan, since 2006. Her major research focuses on the fabrication, functionalization, and physicochemical investigation of nanomaterials, including polymers, nanoparticles, and molecular assemblies, in solutions and at interfaces. Her research fields extend even to applications and commercialization beyond basic science. As a result of her energetic efforts, she has published about 270 peer-reviewed journal articles, 25 reviews, and 25 book chapters and edited the book Advanced Chemistry of Monolayers at Interfaces: Trends in Methodology and Technology in 2007 and Neutrons in Soft Matter in 2011. Her excellent research work is given high importance by scientists in the associated research field not only in Japan but also all over the world. Recipient of several awards, Prof. Imae also contributes to the academic advancement as typified by an editorial advisory board of scientific journals. She is an executive member of the Council for Science and Technology Policy in Japan and a member of the Science Council of Japan.

Perfect companion to hands on training.

I bought this book as a followup to a 3 day seminar I attended with David.

First, let me say that David is one heck of a guy. He is so quiet and unassuming in person that you would never expect him to be the Chief US Insructor for Israeli Krav Maga. He is a pretty patient guy who has no problem helping you over and pver until you get a technique down correctly. Ask me how I know.

This book is a good review of learned defenses/techniques. Any type of skill like this is perishable, so it needs to be reviewed and practiced. Yes, Krav Maga is simple and easy to learn; but, like any system, there are small details that make it most effective. This book has helped me remember some of the finer moves and hand/feet positions that are necessary.

For someone who has never taken a Krav Maga class, this book offers a good introduction to the system and ca allow you to learn quite a bit. Following the pictures and instructions, a person can learn the basics of the techniques. The only drawback is that there is no one to correct any bad techniqies or habits that you may have. There is no replacement for actual dojo instruction, although this book is a good start.

Once you have covered the previous books, this one will take you to the next level of real self defense. This book provides you the opportunity to implement some of the first techniques into your regular practice as you are learning from the first two books. This way, you can build your workouts where you can combine unarmed combat and some combat against an armed attacker. These books go hand in hand with the videos which I'll be adding to my library.

This book illustrates the most current and effective tactics and techniques to prevail against in armed combatant on the street or battlefield. Like all Krav Maga fighting techniques, the methods discussed in this book are simple, instinctive, adaptable and brutally effective. Many of the techniques that discussed in this book have been updated and never before seen outside of the Israel and the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). If you are a serious student of real-world reality-based combatives this book is for you. The book is clear, concise and easy to understand, as well as clearly illustrated. This current book by the author is by far his best presentation on Krav Maga.

You would say this is one of her best books to date. She has broken out of the namby-pamby self help mode into "The Road to Wealth" Yes she is still a "people first" person but this book concentrates on "Everything You Need to Know in good and Bad Times" There is nothing new in the book or anything that you can not find on your own; however it is well organized and explained. It is good to read what you know with a different angle or spin on the information. And yes I did learn some new things and have help with my view. This book is well worth the money even if you have things in control.

Since this book came out she has also written, "The Laws of Money." This book is designed around timeless principles so no matter when you buy it, it will be a useful guideline.

Great poems by writers who are not readily available in anthologies. I admire the editor of this collection who brought their work to my attention. It takes a lot to understand what a woman living in America pre- civil right movements feels but this is a mirror to this time. What genuinely brilliant voices.
