Passed on first try

I did every problem in this book twice a week before the test, I passed the exam.

On its own it is not enough to study for the entire exam, but if you want to put what you learn to practice then I cannot recommend a better book.

The only drawback is that its a bit pricey, perhaps 200-300 problems would make this a killer deal, not just $120.

Problems Not Like the Exam

I rehearsed for the Civil Engineering Survey Exam using this refernece and the PPI practice exam publication only to discover that the exam questions were hardly (if at all) anything like the problems presented in the book. I feel that I wasted alot of time preparing with these two refences.

He is currently a math professor at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC, and his teaching style has been praised as “enthusiastic,” “funny,” and “really loud.” Outside of math, Tom is a professional jazz saxophonist who has shared the stage with everyone from Regis Philbin to Miss America.

Number Theory in the Wright Style

A smooth and entertaining read. It's engaging, entertaining and definitely not lacking any of the humor it promises. If you're looking for a book with vital footnotes and just the right mix of theorems and tall tales, then I definitely recommend this book. Oh, and you learn about number theory.

Funnest. math. book. ever.

I can't think of any math book that is more fun to read than this one. In fact, I'm having trouble thinking of a book that's this fun to read, period. I read it with a big grin on my face and genuinely laughed out loud at times.

But it's not just for laffs: there's a lot of genuine mathematics in this book. Wright doesn't go deep into any particular topic, but at the level he does attempt to explain things, he succeeds beautifully. For example, this book contains the clearest, most accessible explanation of what the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture (one of the famous Millennium Problems) is that I've seen.

I remember years ago reading a blurb regarding Dave Barry: "Mr. Barry is the funniest man in America and we should encourage him." I want to say something similar: Tom Wright is the funniest man in mathematics and we should encourage him. Buy this book, read it, and hope he writes more.

Remember it is Doris Lessing on cats

My prior experience with Doris Lessing was "Descent Into Hell", so I wasn't expecting a fluff piece on the cuteness of cats when I picked up this book, but that said I do agree with another reviewer (K. Bell) that the number of kitten killings was a bit over the top. I certainly understand life and death are inseparable and do not wish the grimmer realities of owning cats to be tucked behind cute aphorisms; one of the things I enjoyed about this book was that she deftly described many aspects and periods of cat life. However, a little birth control goes a long way, and it was never adequately explained why she was so willing to choose offing the kittens rather than fixing the cats. She seemed to think they were less fully cats or something...I suppose I'm not a complete human either then since I'm on the pill ;)
Still, the writing is fantastic, and it's probably worth a read if you enjoy musing on cat behaviours.

HORRIBLE book! NOT for cat lovers!!!!

If I could give this book zero stars, I would. I agree completely with the other reviewers about her gruesome descriptions of killing the unwanted kittens. And her objections to getting her cats spayed so there wouldn't be so many unwanted kittens is just absurd. She writes the repeated matings of her females as if it was some romance novel, not the biological function it is, attributing absurd human emotions to the cats. GET YOUR FEMALES SPAYED, YOU IDIOT!

I love cats and I read the whole thing, hoping it would get better at the end. Finally toward the end, there was less about killing kittens, but there was still a complete lack of emotion from the author. I saw absolutely NO love or caring for any of the cats who had the unfortunate luck to share their lives with her. She was chronicling what happened with the cats, in a very impartial, unemotional way. No emotional connection whatsoever to any of her cats.

I absolutely do NOT recommend this book for cat lovers. I honestly don't know what audience it was intended for. Cat haters maybe?

PLEASE do not purchase this book! Do not support this insult to cats everywhere.

This is an excellent books on cats. It is unsentimental, yet full of warmth and beautifully written. The domestic tensions between black cat and grey develop the drive of an enjoyable thriller. Killing cats and kittens forms as much a part of Lessing's experience as caring devotedly (and grimly) for a cat on death's door, or rescuing a wild cat and her litter after a rainstorm and feeding sauteed chicken liver to her queenly grey cat. Cats are respected as individuals, even fussed over, yet Lessing never loses her clear-sighted, self-ironic stance, which gives her writing a roominess and poignancy not often found in the literature on animals. By writing on cats Lessing has really written a book about life: this is as much a book about the relationships between cats as it is about cats and humans, about death, friendships, kittens and the passing of time - Very recommendable.

A must read for students of homeland security, concerned citizens, and policymakers.

"Understanding Homeland Security" is a comprehensive examination of the past, present, and future of homeland security. An essential element, often overlooked by the media, is developed in the opening chapter, The Nature of the Threat. The authors successfully present historical terrorist events, the causes of terrorism, and the types of terror activities that are used by a variety of terror organizations to meet their agendas. The comprehensive description of terrorism, combined with the development of a working definition of homeland security found in chapter 2, provide the reader with a valuable tool to use throughout the book.

The authors also engage the reader by presenting table top exercises and case studies at the beginning and end of each chapter. Both sections are extremely thought provoking and complement the wealth of information provided in each chapter. "Understanding Homeland Security" is well designed, very readable, and is an important read for anyone interested in homeland security.

A Fine Effort for a Little Book

This short, little paperback covers the basics, even though it uses a broadened or widened definition of terrorism (e.g., socially motivated, incites fear). Historical details are kept to a minimum. Organizational issues closely follow the governmental dictum about how homeland security ought to be organized. The tabletop exercises at the end of each chapter are good. Coverage of intelligence is weak. The authors try to incorporate policy issues at just about every turn. Their strong point is critical infrastructure, and their discussion of risk communication isn't so bad either, both topics introduced in the middle of the book. The final chapter on what the future might look like should have had more opinions or ideas expressed, but despite this, and given a rather antiseptic tone throughout, the book is mostly short, crisp, and to the point, which makes it a good, affordable, text for first-time students.
