They define a symbol as "something that a particular culture considers to mean something else." Each entry features a blue line drawing of the symbol in a generalized pictographic style. Although the quantity of images could have been overwhelming, the symbols are extremely well organized into numbered columns that correspond with the alphabetical front index, or "symbol finder." This index is invaluable because the text itself is composed of eight thematic chapters, among them "Heaven and Earth," "Characters and People," and "Objects and Artifacts." Pertinent cultural meanings for the symbols are refreshingly worldwide, covering Africa, Europe, the Middle East, the Far East, the Americas, and the Pacific. Many of the connotations are religious in nature, with referrences ranging from Aztec beliefs to Mesopotamian mythology to major contemporary religions. The editors encourage readers to "dip" into the book and then follow the threads of capitalized cross references. Rupert Shepherd is a freelance writer specialising in art history. Since graduating from the Courtauld Institute he has written two books on Renaissance art, and is currently working on a book about the history of the Palace of Westminster. Rowena Shepherd is an art historian currently working for English Heritage. Rachel Kennedy is a curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum. She specializes in the art of the 18th century, and has contributed entries on the symbolism of art to a number of dictionaries and encyclopaedias.

Complete Guide to Symbols and Their Meaning

"1000 Symbols" is an extensive compendium of symbols from around the world. What makes this book unique from other books on symbols is the worldwide approach. A specific symbol can mean widely differing things in different cultural contexts and the authors do a wonderful job of examining each interpretation. Each symbol has a number that is cross-referenced to the index at the beginning of the book making them easy to find. In addition, the symbols are categorized into eight general categories for easy browsing. The categories are Heaven and Earth, Characters and People, Body and Actions, Living Creatures, Mythical Beasts, Flowers, Plants and Trees, Objects and Artefacts, and Abstracts. Each of these categories is also subdivided.
Each of the symbols discussed has a line drawing of the symbol along with a detailed description of what the symbol meant to different groups, how it is used today, various ways it was drawn, etc. If you want to know about the various symbols that surround us this is an excellent place to find out. A highly recommended reference for anyone interested in symbols.

I am sorry to report of my disapointment with this title. While it does contain some interesting research, the symbols illustrated are all modernized graphics. The use of traditional and historic depictions of the symbols would have made this work much more readable.

Paul Perez is having troubles at school, and after he brings his talking parrot to school, it says "Don't do your work,the teacher's a jerk", the teacher takes Paul to the office. He trips her on the way, and she cracks her knee on the tile floor. So his parents sent him of to a boarding school, The Caring Academy. When he gets there, the teacher that shows him around says that the kids like to play jokes on the new kid. When he sees his new teacher, Mrs.Maaargh, he thinks he is really weird, and when she says that she is a monster, Paul thinks it's a big joke.Mrs.Maaargh shows him her food chain, a chart with the names of the kids on pieces of paper with velcro tacked on them. She tells him that after the talent show, whomever is at the bottom, she will eat. Paul wants the joke to be over. But at lunch, when he sees Mrs.Maaargh eat a mouse, he is convinced.Paul needs to stay at the top, but he is not jetting where he wants to be. Will Paul make it, or will he become Mrs.Maaargh's Thanksgiving turkey!!...

Great book for kids, especially reluctant readers

Creature Teacher: The Final Exam follows twelve year old Tommy Farrelly as he heads to summer camp. Tommy comes from a competitive family. Though it’s just four – his parents and his sister Darleen – they manage to compete for everything from who gets to a restaurant first to who finishes eating fastest and more. Everything in life is a competition, except Tommy simply isn’t interested in following their example. Needless to say, his family – very vocally – considers Tommy to be a loser and send him to Winner Island Camp where losers never leave the island. Though his family assumes that means everyone will be turned into a winner, Tommy quickly realizes that there’s a much darker reason behind it.

Winner Island Camp is tormented by a teacher who simply showed up one day. Mrs. Maaargh is really a monster, and Uncle Felix, the camp’s director, has made a deal with her that she can eat the loser of the camp at the end of the session if she lets everyone else go home. With Tommy arriving two days late, he’s already several steps behind, and the fact that he doesn’t believe what his fellow campers tell him about the camp only makes it worse. He’s quickly on the bottom of Mrs. Maaargh’s list.

Though the book is aimed at kids, it’s one that adults can read without rolling their eyes repeatedly. It’s obviously a different world and somewhat over the top, but the characters are so different from book to book and have such definite personalities that it is an enjoyable read. I like that the characters don’t change entirely throughout the book but rather use what others consider weaknesses to overcome their obstacles by the end.

I love goosebumps this is a good book I have read and I couldn't put the book down. I would rather read it than play video games! It doesn't take long for tommy to figure out the problem. His whole family is with the best and so he is sent off to a special a camp that will make him a winner and the reason his parents send him to the camp was because his whole family is so competitive and jimmy always lost so that's why is parents send him to the camp, but mean while he was in the camp he saw something was not right and then Mrs. Maaargh who takes lessons on to seriously. And it will make you wonder will he survived.

About the Author
Dennis G. Zill is professor of mathematics at Loyola Marymount University. His interests are in applied mathematics, special functions, and integral transforms. Dr. Zill received his Ph.D. in applied mathematics and his M.S. from Iowa State University in 1967 and 1964, respectively. He received his B.A. from St. Mary's in Winona, Minnesota, in 1962. Dr. Zill also is former chair of the Mathematics Department at Loyola Marymount University. He is the author or co-author of 13 mathematics texts.

A good text on ordinary differential equations with good examples

This particular textbook concerns ordinary differential equations. There are plenty of examples, and they are worked in steps that should make the solution strategy clear to any student with at least two previous semesters of calculus. One of the unusual features of the book are essays written by mathematicians present at the end of chapters 3, 4, 5, and 9. Each essay concerns applications of concepts learned in the previous chapter. The book is well illustrated, and motivations for study are included by making the examples solve practical problems such as the charge on a capacitor, solving orthogonal trajectories of the family of a rectangular hyperbola, or even determining the half-life of a radioactive substance. This makes it ideal for engineering students. There are numerous exercises at the end of each chapter and the solutions to odd numbered problems can be found in the back of the book. Best Book Out There For ODEs

This is the best book I've come across for ordinary differential equations, and I've gone through many of them as a mathematics major! Not only did this book teach me the entire subject matter, I continue to go back to it years later whenever I need to review a technique. The explanations are lucid and clear, and the examples provided are very helpful. Most importantly, when presenting a technique, the authors break it down into all possible cases, so that you are ready to handle any type of problem assigned for hw or tests. I highly recommend this book!

This book came in handy once I started upper-level undergraduate courses in mathematics (if you choose analysis or applied analysis as your focus). I went back to Zill more than any other textbook that I own, to the point where I have certain pages memorized. It's a really great resource.

I Wish it Had a Summary of the Techniques

Was pretty good.

But I was looking for something more direct. I liked the book, but I just wish at the end there was a summary of all the techniques and a straightforward methodology for them.

But instead, I am going to have to go thru and create my own summary. The techniques we are told to use he talked about them within stories most of the time, so the direct steps were not right next to each other. I found myself highlighting sentences here and there all over the place trying to capture the actual required steps of the technique.

If anyone has the same problem as me, then I will share my summary that I create with you. To save me emailing out my simple summary to everyone look for the link in the comments section that I left. It took me some time and effort to create this summary. the techniques are stuck all in the middle of STORIES!

Overall the book is good though, don't get me wrong.

There definitely needs to be like a "recipe" book of Eye Exercises created to COMPLIMENT this book, NOT replace it. Because without this book I wouldnt even a) know the techniques or b) understand why I would do them.

JUST WHAT I NEEDED

This book is amazing. I've done some of the exercises and can already read small print without my glasses, and I am 62 in July! I have worn reading glasses for years, and glasses for night driving. I no longer have to do that, and I've been using the book only about 2 weeks. There is such valuable information in the book that I find it hard to put it down. Yes, it takes commitment and time to apply what is set forth in this amazing book, but I don't know of anything in my life that's worthwhile that is instant! If you are wanting to heal your eyes, improve your vision, and strengthen your body by strengthening your eyes, this is definitely the book for you!

A fine recounting of the Bates excercises and the author's life triumph

I read the Bates eyesight literature back in the late sixties, seventies. At that time I incorporated the shifting, swinging, sunning, and palming excercises that are the jewel core of this and the Bates books. Because of these excercises and getting away from the crutches that glasses are, I no longer have a restriction on my driver's license. The author achieved the same thing and even has a picture of his license in the book.

The book covers three primary goals, one is the author's rise from childhood near-blindness, two is the recounting of the Bates excercises along with new interesting Schneider excercises. The third goal is helping those with actual disease or destruction within their eyes.

I found it best to read the book once and then re-read the excercises part.

The one subject that is only lightly mentioned, but that I think is extremely critical, is that glasses only take a short time to become life-long crutches. It doesn't matter how many years I have not worn perscription glasses (or reading glasses), I still have deep mental pulls to 'make sure to bring the glasses' 'do I have the glasses?' 'can I see (whatever) without the glasses?'. It is a sad crime when little children are fitted with glasses, they will spend the rest of their life with neurotic thought processes surrounding eyeglasses and their eyes.

If any of my ramblings here strike any chords within you, I would suggest you continue your studies on this rarely discussed 'science' of natural eyesight maintenance by picking up Meir's book and applying the exercises to your everyday life. It is natural and easy to add these to whatever you do.

Mr. Speaker, Mr. Vice President, Senator Dole, Members of the 101st Congress, ladies and gentlemen. For a private citizen to be asked to speak before Congress is a rare and very high honor and I thank you.

Simon Willard was never a Member of Congress in the usual sense. Simon Willard of Roxbury, Massachusetts, was a clockmaker early in the nineteenth century and he did it all by hand and by eye.

History as a guide to America's present and future

This book is a short collection of speeches by David McCullough, one of America's foremost historians. The speeches span about twenty-five years and were delivered in a variety of locations and to mark a variety of occasions. Most of them are college commencement addresses - in Boston, Ohio, Missouri and Pittsburgh - and a few mark the anniversary of important monuments (the White House) or events (the Kennedy assassination).

Some of the speeches are inspiring, some of them are informative, and many are both. McCullough's thrust in all of them is to stress the importance of history as a guide to American character and values. He fears that many Americans, and young Americans in particular, are ignorant of the kind of history that can enrich and guide their views of the present and future; his fears are realized by a meeting with a bright young college student who did not know that the original thirteen states were all on the East Coast. He is convinced that not only can history inform people's understanding of contemporary events, but that it can remind people of the values and men and women that made this country what it is. In an interview, McCullough mentioned that he put together this collection specifically for these politically troubled times. At the very least they should reassure people that their concerns and fears have been felt - and overcome - by many others in the past.

In most of his speeches McCullough focuses on one or more great Americans. He is not bashful about taking this 'Great Man' view of history, since many of the characters he picks exemplify well the essential qualities of this country. He recognizes their flaws, but also sees their greatness. Famous Americans like John and Abigail Adams, Thomas Jefferson and JFK make regular appearances, but so do less famous but still important ones like Benjamin Rush, Simon Willard, James Sumner and Margaret Chase Smith. In speeches intended to commemorate buildings, McCullough also lovingly describes the rich history of monuments like the White House and Capitol Hill and cities like Pittsburgh and Boston.

Throughout the book, McCullough emphasizes many of the qualities that exemplified this country's history: "the fundamental decency, the tolerance and insistence on truth and the good-heartedness of the American people". Relationships with France and other countries played a critical role, and so did the hard work of immigrants. There is also bravery here, exemplified by the Founding Fathers' decision to defy the King of England under threat of execution, by abolitionists' denunciation of slavery and by the ceaseless optimism of scores of politicians and common Americans who wanted to change the direction of this country for the better. There was Margaret Smith who stood up against Joseph McCarthy and said that she did not want "to see the Republican Party ride to political victory on the four horsemen of calumny - fear, ignorance, bigotry and smear". There was physician Benjamin Rush who emphasized "candor, gentleness, and a disposition to speak with civility and to listen with attention to everybody". And there was Adams who famously said that "facts are stubborn things". All lessons for the present and the future.

If there is one common theme that emerges most prominently from all the speeches, it is an emphasis on education and an appreciation of history. McCullough tells us how many of the most important Founding Fathers and presidents put learning and books front and center, not just in their own evolution but in their vision for America. Jefferson once said to Adams that he could not live without books, and Adams himself told his son John Quincy that with a poet in his pocket he will never feel alone. McCullough talks about Carpenter's Hall in Philadelphia where Benjamin Franklin established the Library Company that evolved into the country's first public library. As he describes it, the biographies of many famous people tell us that learning is not elitist, it is as American as apple pie. It is what turned this country into a beacon of democracy, science and finance. And for learning it is critical to read: "Read for pleasure. Read to enlarge your lives. Read history, read biography, learn from the lives of others". The same goes for history. McCullough is deeply concerned that younger Americans are losing touch with their history. He urges parents to take their children to historic sites at a young age and Americans of all ages to read and ponder their history. He constantly refers to American presidents who loved to read history; Theodore Roosevelt and JFK even wrote history books themselves. Ultimately, he says, "the pleasure of history consists in an expansion of the experience of being alive". And if nothing else, history should inform Americans of strategies and insights from the past that they can adopt to solve contemporary problems.

The overriding message that comes across from many of these speeches is that of optimism, hope and a constant drive in the American people to reinvent themselves. It should be a potent message in today's times and should hopefully further encourage the study of this country's history. As McCullough puts it, "It is a story like no other, our greatest natural resource. It is about people, and they speak to us across the years".

A solid no-fluff guide, with uncommon know-how on display

Few people are aware of the existence of, let alone the value of a Google News site, and many of those who are aware would rather chase the latest "push button" hype than do the real work necessary to create one of these lucrative sites. Which means there is a great opportunity for those who ARE interested in discovering the how-to, and are prepared to do the work; and for those people, this book is a solid guide - it's accurate and it covers all the bases.

Having had my first attempt at a News site rejected by Google I've performed a lot of reluctant research on what it takes to deliver what Google is looking for. I was pleased to see that this guide covers the fundamentals well, but also moves on to some advanced possibilities that had not occurred to me.

It's terse, there's little "fluff," but it covers good ground; and even with my background I learned some useful information. For example, I've worked with WordPress blogs for a long time but I was unaware of 11 of the 30 or so plug-ins listed and described; and I was unaware of the monetization opportunity which is supported by some of these.

That's no surprise because a "regular" one-man-band blogger would simply never encounter the need - but for a Google News-type blog, looking to capitalize on outside resources and maximize the monetization opportunities, these plug-ins help overcome some challenges and provide support for taking advantage of opportunities.

I also appreciate the author's adherence to "white hat" principles - for example, the stance taken in Step 7 contradicts the content of a $500 course, and the author is quite correct in doing so - following the advice in that course is pretty much a guarantee of rejection these days, as Google has changed the playing field.

Not impressed!

This ebook is really short, and is a great example of the problem with self publishing "authors". I didn't find any information that couldn't be found by doing a google search. In fact much of the information is taken from google, a quick copy and paste. I read a lot of books in this category, and this is defiantly on the very bottom of the list/shouldn't be on the list. I would not recommend this to anyone, even if it's the first thing you read on the topic! I'm really surprised by the 5 star reviews on this ebook. It makes me question the authenticity of those reviewers as well. For those that are thinking about buying this, save your money. Heres a quick rundown of the book; get hosting, install wordpress, apply to google news, then see what happens... Oh, and don't forget to get a good domain name! In my opinion the author didn't put much effort into this, and is really taking advantage of those that really want to learn something of value. Don't be fooled.

This kindle book was fantastic! I never thought for a moment about making a Google News site before reading this. Now, I'm very glad I did! If you have ever considered starting a Google News site definitely check this book out! The information on how to obtain free content is well worth the purchase price alone. Thanks Mandy for a great read and a lot of good ideas on creating a Google News site that hopefully should help me make some great profits in the not too distant future!

Great bathroom or bus commute reading for programming beginners

I have read programming books for years. There was a time when I could write a "Hello World" program in each of seven or eight languages. That time has passed, mainly because I haven't been intimately involved in any specific software project for many years. Still, I have this habit of reading programming books and enjoying them, perhaps in the hope or expectation that one of these days I'll find myself with a project in front of me, time to work on it, and motivation to learn a new language or tool to make the project's vision a reality. Well, here's the newest book of programming foundational tips that I have read.

97 Things Every Programmer Should Know is a collection of short, two page essays, each by an experienced programmer. The book is a collection of tips and tricks for writing code that works, that is maintainable both by the author and by others, and that will best fit the situation. While the book doesn't measure up to some of my all time favorites in the genre like The Art of Unix Programming or The Pragmatic Programmer, it wasn't meant to. This is not an in depth guide to underlying philosophies of coding practices and standards, but quick hit and run articles that would be easy to fully grasp and absorb in short five minute bursts, such as during work or study breaks (which is how I read the book).

Some of the topics included in this book will seem obvious such as "Don't Ignore That Error" and "Comment Only What The Code Cannot Say," and some tips are going to serve only as reminders to best practices that are sometimes ignored (to our own peril) like "Check Your Code First Before Looking To Blame Others" and "Make Interfaces Easy To Use Correctly And Difficult To Use Incorrectly," there are some real gems in the book that aren't so obvious like one author's instruction to "Read the Humanities" because they are a great tool to help programmers learn to effectively interact with people and not just software and the advice that says "Don't Just Learn the Language, Understand Its Culture" so that you will write effectively and idiomatically within each language, rather than writing the same thing using different words.

I can't say that this is a must-have book for experienced programmers, but anyone at the novice to intermediate levels would certainly benefit from what the book contains. I've enjoyed reading it.

Abstract and aphoristic

If you're just entering the programming world, this collection of 2-page essays might be a useful resource. But if you've been reading programmer blogs for a while, or you've worked on a couple of projects, then there's little of value here. Very few of the essayists choose to tell stories; instead, they say things like "Remember that humans always make mistakes," "Read other people's code" and "Always leave the campground cleaner than you found it."

Speaking of which, where is the code? A book on programming without code is like a day without sunshine! To give one example: The second essay, "Apply Functional Programming Principles" by Edward Garson, assures you that you'll write cleaner, clearer code after working with a functional programming language, but his assurances feel awfully airy without any examples. Maybe this is inevitable in a book that's language-agnostic. Books like Code Complete and Clean Code are hopping with code samples (in C++ and Java, respectively); as a result, they do a far better job of engaging the reader and making abstract concepts stick.

A notable exception is "Code in the Language of the Domain" by Dan North, which uses code to illustrate a concept and uses it well. You might want to read that one, but you don't need to buy the book to do so: All of the essays in this book are Creative Commons-licensed and can be read on the book's official website.

Here is why Joel Spolsky's books are so good: He tells stories. He gives examples. He restrains himself from bombarding the reader with familiar aphorisms. You're imbibing his experiences, not just listening to him ramble. If you haven't already read Joel on Software and More Joel on Software, definitely do so. A Starting Point For Your Conversations

This book is a compilation of short essays ranging on topics as diverse as Bugs, Error Handling, Customers, Refactoring, and Expertise. The purpose of the short essay is not to answer all your questions or be a definitive guide to programming. Rather the purpose is to provide a starting point for a conversation. To this end, I think a practical way to use this book whether in academia or a development team would be to assign groups of essays to be read ahead of time to stimulate classroom or team meeting discussions.
